Loughinisland Conservation Plan

Loughinisland Conservation Project

“God cares for this landscape, but he cannot save it from fools”

(Quote by John Muir, the Scottish conservationist who founded Yosemite National Park.)

We, as DDAA members are important stewards for our club waters and we all should be participating in protecting and enhancing our lake and lands both for ourselves and the generations to follow.

At the moment the club is striving to have the whole or parts of the lake and its margins as Conservation Sites. This will protect our asset for years to come and ensure that we have the full backing of the law in dealing with any environmental threats or issues that might arise.

As with all Governmental issues, the route is long winded and will not happen overnight, but you can all help with this project.

What we need is simply your eyes and ears in detailing the flora and fauna at Loughinisland and fishermen are renowned for their “David Attenborough” skills!

Let’s see what you can see

So…look out for our resident otters and mink, the different types of bats, the kestrels and warblers, the different ducks, swans, newts, badgers… The different insects and dragonflies or damselflies and moths are all interesting, as are the types of reeds and plant life that surround the margins. It doesn’t matter how small you may think your sighting is…it may just turn out to be very important!

All this information can then collated and given to the correct governmental department for their analysis and they can hopefully identify important species that will enable us to obtain a conservation protection of sorts.

Your information can be written in the comments book in the clubhouse or simply drop me a line to dstewartltcr@gmail.com

Please date and time any sightings and give approximate locations too. If you can take a photograph that would be even better and every so often I will write an update on the website to let you all know just what’s living at or in our lake. A small prize will be given at the next AGM for the best sighting or photograph.
